all is quiet . . .

One of the things I did not anticipate about living in the country is the QUIETness of it all. Sure, I knew that the country was not filled with lights, stores, and the traffic that makes night time seem alive in the city. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck you know. But this evening as I sit here to post, I am quite shocked at how quiet it is in (and outside ) the house. No lights, no stores, no people, just the darkness and the "stuff" outside. Actually, to be honest, I am sometimes a little afraid to go outside in the evening by myself here. Not that there is anyone or anything outside here where we are living. In fact, just the opposite is true. There is NOTHING and NO ONE for miles around. It is just us, the neighbors, and the plants. On several occasions I have caught myself saying "I'll go out there tomorrow" when I feel like I need to get something from the pig barn at night. What would I be getting from a PIG BARN you might ask? It is where I am storing my stuff, sort-of like a garage.

The children are in bed by eight, asleep by nine. Ildi is usually tired early, and I can't help but think "I can't go to bed at 9:30!" I'm an adult now. However, I am faced with the ominous quiet and am really quite amazed at the reality of it in comparison to the idea that I had before I moved out here. I even think that this keyboarding is slightly echoing. :)

That quietness you describe reminds me of the movie "Children of the Corn". Is it that kind of scared or something else. I'm listening to a helicopter circle as I type. Do you miss that sound? Call me. I want to chat longer.

I love what Traveler wrote - very funny. I love my city lights view and would miss it quite a bit. I can imagine the spookiness of the quiet, though. I wouldn't like that either. Be brave in that dark night!

I am sitting here, in the country of Ohio, not far from where you are, listening to the crickets and thinking it sure is noisy out here in the country!

LOL! It is all relative...

We have pretty close to the same kind of quiet here. However we are a mere 3 miles from the interstate so we can hear it once in awhile.

I have had the same 'hair standing on end' when wandering out to the workshop to retrieve something, we however have an extra bit of hair raising. There are Black Bears here and cougars. Not many cougars, but every once in awhile you see the bear sign. It's a bit spooky. ;)

Thanks for the post earlier, that guy read the first and last paragraphs of the posting and went off from there.

Jeff- I hate that my parents let me watch that movie at such a young age! I am still haunted by THOSE children.

lctj- I feel like I too will miss the city at times. That actually was one of my concerns when thinking about moving to the country. Maybe you can record the sounds and email a audio file :)

ginny- You are just tooooooo hilarious! Do you have cicadas also that SCREAM like the ones here?

Rob- we do here the highway here as well. But that is the only noise that is out in that SCARY dark place. I would be afraid if I were you as well.

We have screaming cicadas, screeching bluejays, killdeer that scream all night long, and skunks that leave their perfume as they pass your open window at night. I have a hard time thinking it is quiet here.
